Angry Vegans

Should food makers/preparers have to certify their product Vegetarian / Vegan?
We’ve made a concious choise as vegans/vegetarians to eliminate ceratin foods from out diets. Should those providing food service give us some sort of gurantee that we’re getting what we ask for?
How many times have you gone to a restaurant and asked for something without meat only to get it and have to fork the chicken pieces out of your pasta?
Even some Veggie hamburgers and hot dogs have been known to actually contain meat.
Does it make you angry somtimes?
Is there anyone monitoring this? If so, what and how can I get involved?
The reason I don’t send food back is I know a few people who have worked in restaurants and food that gets sent back get’s the royal treatment if you know what I mean. There can be all sorts of added extras you really didn’t want. Or they’ll just pick the little meat pieces off themselves and give it right back to you.
I don’t like to mess with the people who handle my food.
Man, some of these people are rude! I think your concern is valid. It’s too bad people can be so ignorant.
Just like food preparers need to be careful about listing foods that cause known allergies, they have an obligation to be honest about other content as well. The FDA does regulate who can adverstise their products as “vegan” though the requirents for “vegetarian” are much more loose, for example they may contain eggs or dairy. Too be on the safe side I would only trust products labeled as vegan.
In the case of dining out, when you find meat in your dish, bring it up! There are many reasons why a person might not want to eat it. It is not limited to vegetarianism. It could be a religious observation or a health reason. I’ve found that even if restaurant staff do not agree with your cause, they are more than happy to oblige as long as you are clear about what you want and let them know when you don’t get that.
