What does the Bible say about animal cruelty?

I live a vegan lifestyle for I do not support the animal abuse that exists in factory farms. How does God feel about animal abuse?

Let me first say that I’m really surprised at all the thumbs down I’m seeing here, and how many people are posting with things like, “I think…” or “It makes sense that…” and not actually looking through for passages at all. If sheep are those that blindly follow something without question or fact, then there are many sheep who post here.

That said…

It specifically states in Genesis that we are the caretakers of the animals, and we were initially supposed to be vegan (Genesis 1:29 “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat”). Someone also listed a passage from Proverbs. I like to remind people that while God had no qualms allowing all the “bad” people to drown in the Great Flood, Noah was specifically instructed to save the animals. Animal cruelty should not take place if men truly understand the command to be “caretakers” of the earth. In fact, Kosher meats must be produced without cruelty to the animal.

Of course, there are things in the Bible that clearly point to the fact that animals are not listed as equals or even just pets for us to take care of, as they are used as clothing, food, sacrifices, someone listed the Jesus and pig incident, etc..

However, while animals are used in a variety of ways, no where does it ask us to be cruel to the animals or list that it is okay to do so (again, refer to that verse in Proverbs, which states the exact opposite). This just means that there’s nothing in the Bible that states we are not to use animal flesh/hide/bone, but simply that we aren’t supposed to be total jerks to them.
