If You Are a Vegetarian or Vegan You May Qualify for a College Scholarship

Many people refuse to eat meat and some even won’t wear any products animal derived or use anything where animals were sacrificed.. For some it’s due to personal reasons, for others one’s religion and others notice a different in their health by avoiding meat products. Some people that are vegetarians will not eat any beef, pork or other meat products including ham, chicken, rabbit and deer. There are other people who used the word vegetraianism but will eat fish and egg products. Some people call themselves a vegetarian and still eat chicken. Strict vegetarians object to this as the life of a living being is taken.

Vegans on the other hand are a bit stricter with their practice. They abstain from all forms of meat and eggs. They will not eat anything or wear anything that is derived from an animal. Their diet consists of plants, fruit, and grains and beans such as chicpeas. Vegans do not approve of using an animal to make leather goods such as handbags or furs. The emphasis is on compassion for any living being and to not use animals for testing or human purposes. One organization Called The Vegetarian Resource Group offers scholarships for those heading to college.

The VGR discusses issues around health as well as ethics and the planet. They are involved in publishing which includes some cookbooks, their own journal and many articles. They award scholarship money to students who embody the vegetarian lifestyle and point of view. To qualify, it is helpful if you are a high school senior who has been vocal in your school or local community about these ideals. If you are applying for the scholarship, you should also be not someone who eats chicken, meat and fish.

Show examples of how you embody this philosophy in your essay and also include your grade transcripts as well as letters from three individuals. If there have been any newspaper headlines, be sure to put this in your package. The deadline for applications is in February, so working on it over Christmas break can be a good time to organize the materials. It is wonderful receive a grant for something you are passionate about and those who avoid meat products often are active in their communities.
