How to Eat Healthy When You Are On The Road
If you are traveling by plane, you may receive a meal. These meals are supposed to be somewhat nutritious, but suggest having a backup option. You will know whether the flight will serve a meal or not when you book your flight. Most flights do serve a vegetarian option, but most likely not a vegan option. The vegetarian dish may be more nutritional than the non-vegetarian, but it really depends on what they are serving. If possible, eat a healthy meal before your board your flight so that you won’t have to eat the entire meal that is served on the flight to feel full.
When driving or taking a bus, you may be tempted to stop at a fast food restaurant – or that may be the only option. Avoid this whenever possible! Bring healthy snacks with you and try to find a stop or exit that has a variety of restaurants. If you’re on vacation, you’ll probably splurge a little bit, but having fast food more than one time in a week can be bad for your health. Not only that, but if your body is accustomed to healthy food, it may reject the chemical ingredients found in the unhealthy food. Not the best scenario when you’re out and about in a strange town! If you do go to a fast food restaurant, choose the healthiest options available, like chicken breasts, salad, water or diet soda. One of the keys to eating healthy while traveling is to eat similar things that you would eat at home.
In some cases, you can take your own food when traveling. Carrying a loaf of whole-wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean lunchmeat, and low-fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk foods. Bringing your own food with you ensures you know the nutritional value of what you are eating as well as saving you money! If you’ll be staying in a hotel, call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your room.
Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads or pasta get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. Many restaurant menus have an area dedicated to low fat or low carb options for their health-conscious customers – like you. Control your portion sizes by ordering by ordering from the lunch menu or splitting your meal in half before you start eating. If you won’t be taking the remainder of the food with you, offer it to your companion or ask the waitress to only bring half the portion.
Eating healthy while traveling can definitely be a challenge. However, your health is worth it. You will likely encounter someone who is sick while you are traveling. Your sleep and eating patterns may be interrupted due to the travel, which will weaken your body. Eating healthy while traveling strengthens your body’s defenses against illness and will give you enough energy to be alert and sharp.
