Vegans Breastfeeding
Can infants be vegan? Purely curiosity.?
I am not a mother to be, nor a vegan (I’m vegetarian). I just wanted to know – can infants be vegan?
After babies are done breastfeeding or off formula most parents seem to give their children whole milk in their bottles or sippy cups right?
Can babies have soy milk instead? Is it fatty enough for healthy brain development?
Just curious.
Let’s assume for the sake of this argument that you believe breastmilk can be part of a vegan lifestyle (there are some that disagree, but I believe they are the minority).
There is no reason to wean from breastmilk at 12 months -vegan or not. Human babies are meant to breastfeed until 2-4 years of age. If you do breastfeed that long and at least 3-4 times a day you have very little concerns about protein, fat, and vitamin A in your child’s diet.
If you do formula feed or you do stop breastfeeding again cow’s milk is not necessary -nor is any other breastmilk replacement. There are many cultures that do not drink the milk of any animal and still they and their children get enough protein, fat, and calories. Most of these cultures also have lower rates of osteoporosis. There are tonnes of sources of fat, protein, etc.
You can also continue soy based formula past 12 months (though these are very rarely truly vegan) And there are some soy milks with added fats, or you can add fat.
That being said in recent years there has been a lot of concern raised about giving soy to children. France and Israel have released very strict guidelines on the use of soy in children under 5
