do vegans have an opinion on horse racing?

As a former horse owner I do take issue with horse racing. I actually fostered a horse rescued from the track. She was a mess when she came to us. You could hardly get near her she had been so terribly abused. Nearly 4,000 race horses a year sustain injuries severe enough to end their racing career. Nearly 800 die. Race horses are often inbred to preserve a particular winning lineage, which makes for mentally and physically unstable animals once you inbreed down the line. Owners of these horses, who stand to make millions from their potential winning, have them begin training at the age of two, a good two years before they should even be broken for riding as their bones and joints are not fully developed yet.

Oftentimes when a horse has sustained injuries sufficient enough to cost the owner more money than the horse is deemed they’re worth they are sold to a slaughterhouse. There is no redeeming quality of horse racing. It’s an excuse for women to wear big hats and sip mojitos while their husbands gamble all day long. Meanwhile the animals are the ones suffering for their amusement.
