Metabolic Typing Diet
Any fitness program or regimen is only as strong as its foundation, and perhaps at the foundation of optimal health and athletic performance is proper diet and nutrition. Inappropriate choices in this area will not only render athletic training far less effective, but also enhance the risk of disease. The natural question then is, how does one determine what appropriate is?
Discoveries
Over the last century, extensive research in the area of nutrition has revealed key links between diet and health. The discovery that each individuals body, due to its unique biological makeup, assimilates nutrition differently was a revolution in science. Variations in climate, local produce, environmental conditions, genetics and heredity were understood to be significant factors in the uniqueness of each persons metabolism. This understanding shed light on the fact that the causes of many illnesses which are linked to diet are not universal, but rather very specific to the affected individual. The prior belief was that the excess of certain foods universally caused certain diseases, an example of this being the once popularly held notion that high cholesterol was the root of heart disease. The research revealed that even a vegan diet which was labeled ‘healthy’ could be ideal for one person while simultaneously putting another at risk for various illness. Further investigation revealed this discovery to be an answer to the question of food allergies such as allergic reactions to nuts and lactose intolerance. The methodology of how to determine each persons unique metabolic type then ensued.
The Diet Industry
How can it be that in a multi-billion dollar industry, with thousands upon thousands of diets, teas, patches etc. to choose from, that we commonly hear that 98% of diets fail? When considering the breakthrough discoveries previously mentioned, the obvious issue reveals itself. It is not necessarily that the diets out there don’t work, its that they just don’t work for everyone. The discovery of metbolic types clearly revealed that a ’silver bullet’ one size fits all diet solution for every person is not a possibility. In light of these realities it becomes quite clear that perhaps that very same universal approach is at the core of the high rate of failure of most diets.
What exactly is Metabolic Typing?
The two competing determinants of a persons metabolism are the autonomic (unconscious) nervous system (ANS) and the oxidative system. The ANS has two branches; The sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic coutrois adrenaline and acidifies the body when active. The parasympathetic deals with bodily digestion and promotes alkalinization of the body when it’s active. A basic premise in bodily health is a concept of having the proper alkaline to acidic balance which is measured by pH. If the body becomes too alkaline or too acidic, the potential for illness increases dramatically. The second determinant, the oxidative system, controls the rate at which cells convert food into energy. Though potassium and magnesium are normally needed to activate the non-sympathetic side and promote alkalinization, in the oxidative they lead to acid production in the body, thus the two systems tend to balance each other out in regards to pH. As a result, the net effect of the pH level is determined by which system is dominant in the given individual. Therefore if you give 10 people the same diet and each of them has a different metabolic type, the only thing that would determine the pH balance, and ultimately health or sickness would be the metabolic type. Metabolic Typing then is the determination of how an individual’s metabolism functions.
The byproduct of an optimized diet through metabolic typing is increased energy, normal/optimal bodyweight, improved digestion and detoxification, a more positive mood, stronger immune system and enhanced athletic performance. With the right diet for your body, you will eat right and feel satisfied. Many diets focus on calorie reduction, which in many cases can cause an increase in weight. An optimized diet however, through metabolic typing, is unconcerned with calorie counting.
