What Do Vegans Eat Anyway

Food that Burns Fat—What Protein are You Eating?

Way back when Dr. Atkins introduced the low carb dieting wave, it was definitively proven that protein was the food that burns fat.  It seemed to fly in the face of conventional thinking in nutrition, but for many people, it gave results.  The main shortcoming of that diet was that it hadn’t yet taken all the factors of protein’s role in weight loss into consideration.

Soy Protein Doesn’t Count—It Makes Things Harder

Many vegetarians and vegans took the low carb diet programs to mean that increasing soy protein intake was an effective way to lose weight.  Further research has proven that soy products like tofu are actually counterproductive.

A fairly recent diet called the “testosterone diet” states that soy increases estrogen production and lessens testosterone production.  Since testosterone increases the metabolism and estrogen causes fat retention, this shows soy’s ineffectiveness in fat burning.

Animal Protein is the Best for Fat Burning

Across the board, animal protein is considered the best kind for fat burning goals.  Referencing the testosterone diet again, animal protein increases testosterone better than any other kind.  In fact, the more red meat you consume, the better your chances of increasing your metabolism.  Also, shellfish is high in zinc, the essential component of testosterone production.

What isn’t taken into account in the testosterone diet is that organic, free range animals are the best of all.  The carbohydrates they consume will be carbohydrates that you consume.  If they’re not grain fed, and especially if no growth hormones are involved, your goals are more in your sight.

Advice for Vegans—Eat Nuts for Protein

This diet program so far has excluded vegans.  If you are a vegan, you still have non-meat options.  Nuts, especially unroasted and organic ones, are an excellent source of high zinc protein.

This, of course, extends to nut butters like peanut butter, walnut butter, pecan butter and all the rest.  Just like with the whole nuts, you should aim for the organic and unroasted varieties.

Whatever Your Protein Source, Drink Lots of Water

Water is an essential part of any diet, and most especially any that involves increased animal proteins.  Besides the hydration factor, water helps immensely with weight loss in other ways.  For one thing, there will be toxins that need to be flushed from your system as you shift to organic.

For another, your diet will involve a state of ketosis, a necessary acidic state for burning fat.  Also, as you burn fat, more fatty acids will be free-floating in your system.  Also, as your metabolism increases, your base body temperature will increase, and nothing beats water to keep you from being flushed and overheated.
