Xmas Gifts For Vegans

xmas gifts for vegans
What kind of presents?

One sister has a high-paying job and she’s getting married. I am unemployed and in debt. Second sister is living with my rich parents.

1: I got a wedding card. Should I find a gift that’s for my sister and her fiance? What’s a good wedding gift that I can afford?
2: I still need to get a Christmas gift for both sisters, right? What should that be? Do I need to buy 2 Christmas cards as well?
3: These are the only presents I’m buying, but I still can’t afford to spend too much.

I don’t have anything of sentimental value, so I need to buy stuff. I was thinking of burning the entire season of Lost onto CDs for my older sister for the Xmas gift; but she probably bought it already. :(

Is a doll of a Golden Lab a tacky wedding gift? (She owns a Lab.) Or maybe a $12 painting of the cast of Friends? .. I don’t know the fiance well enough; I just know he likes my sister and they’re vegan.

You don’t have much money. Hopefully you are trying to pay down your debt. Do not go overboard at Christmas. People do this all the time. They spend a fortune at Christmas and are paying on it til May. It’s a dumb idea. Buy a tin and make some homemade cookies. If you are artistic, make them something. Perhaps buy a calendar of where they are going for their honeymoon. If all you guys are over 21, buy a bottle of wine. Either way–you are broke and have no money. Stick with under $15 for Christmas.

As for the wedding, when is the wedding? You don’t have to be getting them their gift now. As for how much you spend, that’s completely up to you. I mean weddings are a once in a lifetime thing so I tend to spend a fair amount on those I am close to. However if you can’t afford it you can’t afford it. I recommend signing up for Bed Bath and Beyond mailing list. You’ll get coupons for 20% off an item all the time. They never expire. Collect several of them. Then come in and get a grab bag for them of the small stuff. Ice cream scoop, garlic press, zester, all the small items on their registry. You could do a lot of that for about $25. Burn a cd of romantic music and get them some votive candles. That could be less than $5. Make your own gift basket. A bottle of champagne, a fondue pot for chocolate dipped strawberries, a couple candles, ask to see if anyone can burn you a copy of a romantic cd. Shop the after Christmas sales and you should be able to make your own gift basket for $25.

I know you say you don’t have anything of sentimental value but sentiment would be because it is from you. If you have skills, put it to use. Can you embroider? Put their names and wedding date on an afgan. Do you have some photos of them? Make them a collage. The time and effort you spend on that is what makes it sentimental.

A great site is mydavinci.com. You send a picture of the two of them and they turn it into art. It’s about $25 for the caricature. Then frame it for them and you have an amazing gift for less than $30.

You don’t have the money for big gifts. I remember when I was in college one of my friends got married. I could only get her a present that was $20. She understood that $20 from me would cost me a lot more than $100 from many others. But it’s dumb to increase your debt for gifts you can’t afford to buy. Spend only what you can afford. Remember your time is worth a lot.

(Avoid a painting of the cast of Friends–it’s not something a married couple would put in their house. It’s more a college thing.)
